Food hoses and fittings

Food hoses and fittings

A lot is required of hoses used in the food industry. The right type of hose in the right place is both safe to use and durable. Not all hoses are automatically food grade.

In practice, this means that bacteria can grow in the hose at worst. The rule of thumb for this could be if the material in the hose smells of something, then it is not food grade. If the hose smells / smells, then it also releases flavor with the material to be transferred. Externally, the food-grade rubber hose is identified by a white butyl inner rubber and a blue outer hose. Of course, there may be other color options, but this seems to be a fairly well-established practice in Finland.

Approval of food hoses

Hose manufacturers apply for food safety approvals for the hoses they manufacture. The most common and well-known of these is the FDA = Food and Drug Administration. That agency drafts regulations for products intended for the U.S. market. We also have our own regulations in Europe, but apparently the US FDA requirements for imported products are so demanding that the FDA has become a well-established hose label. The FDA is therefore a very well-known approval for hoses in the food and pharmaceutical industries.

Use of food hoses

When choosing a food hose, it is important to know the substance to be transferred, as well as the temperature of the substance to be transferred. For example, high temperatures place special demands on the hose. The pressure of the substance to be transferred and the length of the hose also influence the choice of hose. Of course, the use of the hose itself also has an effect: is there any movement in the hose, or does the hose have to be disconnected and connected several times? It is also important to consider the cleaning of the hoses after use, ie with what detergents and chemicals are the food lines washed after use? The operating pressure of the wash water can also be different from the pressure of the substance to be transferred.
