Food hose

The idea of food hoses is that they do not release unwanted flavors or odors into the product, because hoses, pipes and seals are contact materials when they come into contact with food. The manufacturer, importer or, for example, the marketer is responsible for the safety of contact materials. Food hoses applications include e.g. water, milk, wine, spirits.

The Food Act sets a high level of requirements for all contact materials that come into contact with food. Typical requirements are that good operating conditions are taken into account in the manufacturing method, and that no chemical substances from the contact material can transfer into the food, which would harm human health or cause changes in the food.

Instructions for washing and disinfecting the food hose

Foodstuffs can have bad taste due to long-term storage or poor handling of the hose. When using the hose, steam the hose twice to +130 degrees max. 20 min at a time, cooling in between. The hose can also be rinsed for 24 hours, where 4g of sodium lye and 5.8g of table salt are mixed with a liter of +40 degree water. After this, the hose is rinsed with clean water.

The service life of the hose is affected by e.g. operating temperature, chemical properties and transfer speed and time.

Food hoses have many different standards

FDA Approved Material: No. 21 CFR 177.2600, a regulation created by the United States and the Department of Medicine for the food industry. This ensures the use of rubber products that will be used repeatedly, both in manufacturing, packaging, transportation and storage.

EU approval: No. 1935/2004, is one framework regulation/requirement regarding food hose for materials that come into contact with food, i.e. "Food contact materials" (FCM). Materials that are going to be used for food, but are not yet in use, must be accompanied by the term "food use". Or add a signature image, such as a coffee machine, spoon or wine bottle.

German approval: BfR XXI category 2, is a guideline created by the German Federal Institute for Risk Analysis for the use of rubber in the food industry. The rubber article is divided into four usage groups depending on its contact with foodstuffs. Long-term contact, medium-term contact, short-term contact and negligible contact. In addition, a migration test must be performed on the material.
